A reawakening

The transformation of what was once the largest motor vehicle repair workshop in the former GDR will see the emergence of a creative urban district. The centrepiece of the site is the “Schaumagazin”, a flexible display area for art in the former garages. One distinctive feature is the large workshop, with a floor space of 14,000 m². The proposal of KRP-Architekten earmarks this for use as a creative lab.
The visual concept for the site also underscores its identity. Open forms, dashed lines and a variable font are a conscious indication of maximum diversity of use. The second life of the KIW Quartier is flexible, open and free.
