Bulovka University Hospital, Prague

Sensing orientation, finding trust.

How do you find your way around the sprawling campus of Bulovka University Hospital in Prague – embedded in a hilly, wooded site with around 25 buildings and over 20 kilometres of roads and paths? An undoubted challenge – not just for orientation, but also for barrier-free accessibility.

To bring structure and clarity to this complex situation the site was broken down into four zones, each of which is coded according to colours and letters. This simple, intuitive order reduces the information overload and establishes orientation at a glance. Gently rounded forms and harmonious colours lend the signage an inviting appearance – and transform the technical logic of a hospital campus into a place that radiates a feeling of trust. The result is the expansion of functional wayfinding into something altogether greater: an invitation, not to lose oneself amongst the multifaceted diversity of everyday hospital life, but instead to feel welcome there.
