Forum Nová Karolina, Ostrava

Back to Black

Black, slender and radiant – the distinctive pylons and portals that mark the way through Nová Karolina, the new residential, commercial and shopping district in the Czech city of Ostrava. Built on the site of a former mine, Nová Karolina is a symbol of the regeneration of coal and steel town Ostrava. The new wayfinding system consciously references the industrial past of the “black city”, whilst its radiant blue edges and futuristic lettering also point to the future. This makes it a perfect fit for the shopping mall of Nová Karolina: Designed by the acclaimed Dutch architects OMA, the building is the centrepiece and highlight of the new district.
